Since 1988, a robust and formalized tutoring partnership between Portland State University
(PSU) and Portland Public Schools Migrant Education Program has benefited about 18,585
migrant and high poverty K-12 students in 60 Portland schools. Each year, 520 PSU
students (10,920 over 21 years) are civically engaged through 15 sections of the Introduction to
Education and Society course taught by a team of 6-8 faculty across two departments:
Curriculum & Instruction and Educational Leadership & Policy. The win-win reciprocal
relationship serves as a model for integration of theory and practice, service and learning, by
dispelling myths and stereotypes regarding poor children and children of color.
