This is part of an instructional tape I made in 1997, showing me carving Marilyn Monroe into a pumpkin. For more pictures and a step-by-step tutorial, see my web site at: www.carvingdude.com.

  • Great explanation. I always wondered about the technique on the layering and that helped. I have also heard spraying the pumpkin with Lysol helps preserve....have you tried that or do you not recommend it?

  • I haven't tried Lysol, but anything that would help kill mold would help. I've tried soaking them in a mild bleach solution, and that helps some. I've also painted them with shellac, but that turns them darker and makes them shiny, which may not be a bad thing. I don't remember the mold growing with the shellac, but it still dried out and shrunk.

Putting them in the refrigerator closed up in a garbage bag works the best and is easiest for me.
