@lapmarty I meant it like he's part of the "old guard," because so many composers who are the hot properties these days are relatively newer ones, whereas Silvestri is one who's been around for a much longer time now. I guess it's hard to explain.
@MikeAM78 i beleive silvestri is using sample nowadays, he did use them extensivly on the abyss, so yes he has a classical formation, as for horner, williams, and many other and yes he use the modern tool to writte, i dont see what you mean by the last of its breed,
williams is way more a old school composer then silvestri in my book, he dont use computer still today,
Silvestri is almost like the last of an era. So many composers these days are a "newer breed," working predominately with electronics, but Silvestri is an old-school orchestral composer who's still hanging in there. IMO, his action music is in a league of its own. My second-favorite composer of all time (behind only Jerry Goldsmith), and my current favorite living composer. Can't wait to hear his music for "Captain America."
@jedidarrick I don't know what you downloaded from Rapidshare, but it wasn't anything from Silvestri's "Pirates." He left the project before anything was recorded, and in fact -- if I remember correctly -- never got any further than just a demo piece, which no one has ever even heard. He never even wrote anything for what would have been his score. Silvestri has talked about this in interviews and basically says his involvement was over before it could even really start.
@RichardKleiner Yes. I found an mp3 on Rapidshare that had Alan's main title. Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer's score was far superior. When I heard Alan Silvestri's score, he sounded like he was copying off of the film scores of Danny Elfman. Gore Verbinski made the right choice by not using Alan's score.

It wasn't Gore Verbinski's choice, it was Jerry Bruckheimer's.
