Dude bears aren't armor plated. A well placed shot to the heart, lungs, neck, or head could probably take one down. And that's a big target too. Not only that, the sound of the gun shot alone would probably scare them off.

Fending off a grizzly bear with a knife on the other hand, I wouldn't want to do it. A samurai sword, maybe. Or lash the knife to the end of a long stick, like Bear Grylls, maybe.
