In South Africa, we continue to build the largest and dirtiest coal power stations in the world.
- Eskom claims it is 'clean coal', but Eskom is lying, because it's clean only in the sense of reduced sulphur dioxide, not the crucial CO2.
- Eskom claims it uses coal for the development of the poor, but Eskom is lying. Domestic use only takes up 20% of our power. One company alone takes 6% of our power, more than Cape Town and Durban combined, for their aluminium smelters.
That company is BHP Billiton, listed in Australia and the UK. The aluminium isn't even mined here - the ore is shipped in, melted at Richard's Bay, then shipped out again, with little or no benefit to South Africans. We're effectively letting rich western nations consume carbon through us. So much for helping the poor.
But what do you expect from a South African government-run company? The same government has twice refused the Dalai Lama a visa, and is now busy trying to shut down free speech.
This video was originally conceived for American's Republican leadership. America, as the largest economy in the world, is incredibly influential in shaping the development of the world. However, it's incredibly scary that half their politicians don't believe in climate change (or evolution).
This video aims to show that these people that the same science they used to split the atom or put astronauts in space, tells us that man-made climate change is definitely happening, and happening now!
The World Energy Council last month estimated we have 5 years lefts to continue increasing our CO2 creation at current rates, and then we'll be past the tipping point for 4 degree average climate change.
4 degrees doesn't sound like much until you consider that during the last ice age , when most of the world was covered in ice, the average temperature was only a few degrees different.
You might consider yourself a greenie, but chances are your iPhone or Apple Mac or bicycle uses aluminium or some other energy intensive metal.
The point it we're all in this together, and unless we can persuade our leaders to change direction on major CO2 consumption, like from power stations, our grandchildren, and maybe our children too, will suffer badly, as will millions of other species on our planet, which will become extinct.
