Bear refused the roughing penalty because in 1973 it was not an automatic first down. It still would have been 4th and 5 from midfield and Bama had 3 time outs. The rule was changed giving an automatic first down on personal foul penalties because of this very play, but those were the rules at the time. Bear made the right call.

As an Alabama fan this was the most heartbreaking loss in my life. I was 11 years old watching the game from my father's hospital room. We did not know at the time but the Docors thought he had Lukemia, but fortunately it was only cat scratch fever LOL (the symptoms are alike.) It seemed like ND caught every break. Dad did recover and lived to go with me to see the Tide beat ND in Birmingham in 1986 before he passed in 1988. This WAS the game of the century. Congrats to ND, but what a game.

Why did Bear Bryant refuse the roughing the kicker call late in the 4th Qtr? That doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks for the video, enjoyed it a lot!

Despite all of the bitterness and hatred expressed by the USC faithful such as Greymoose1000, those who watched the game and love college football, know what a great football game this was. Two very classy and dignified schools conducting battle at the highest levels. It was an all-time classic!

@NDMIKE2010 This game involved an established drunk (BEAR BRYANT) and a team that is supported by the CATHOLIC CHURCH which has served to destroy mankind from its inception. THE DOMER's are currently led by Coach Kelly who along with the ND Administration, have covered up the murder of young DECLAN last year. The MOOSE and his fellow Men of Troy stand for integrity and HONOR above all else and shall never allow ND to forget the student they killed last year.

@Bamruff62 Good Day Bamruff62,
I was 10 when I saw this game. As a Notre Dame fanatic, this game was the biggest moment in my young life! The Alabama Team was phenomenal. This was the greatest football game I had ever seen. I lived on a small farm just 30 miles south of South Bend. Notre Dame football was everything to me. It took a solid month of begging my parents before they agreed to let me stay up and watch this game. Greatest game of All Time and Greatest News Year celebration!

#23 Art Best- RB

That's my uncle Art Best in this game. Funny enough, I randomly ran into a former teammate of Art’s in Houston about five years ago. I was in the same taxi(going from one airport to another in Houston) with him when I noticed a big golden ring which said Notre Dame on it. I told him who my uncle is and he just about exploded with shock and happiness. He told me that the year they were champs that he was a freshman and that Art was THE fucking fastest guy on the team.I wish I remembered his name
Did you notice the Alabama defender help the Notre Dame RB up after scoring a TD? Sadly you don't see that anymore.

This game had it all. Had great offensive plays and great defensive plays. Great slugfest. Still remember it. I was 11. I would get too nervous to watch it, so I 'd stand out in the hallway and listen to the TV like a radio.
It was a heartbreaker for my crimson tide. Please show one or two scores by the tide. Alabama had a great razzle dazzle play where the R.B. threw the ball back to the QB and the QB (Todd) ran it in for a TD.
Best bowl game in CFB history, imho.
