March 1994 - A profile of Khun Sa, the region's most powerful and autocratic drug warlord and his 20,000-strong army.
The American Drug Enforcement Agency says Khun Sa's army protects his drug interests, but Khun Sa says it's to continue his fight against the Burmese. He proclaimed independence for his Shan land from Burma in 1993. Ho Mong, Khun Sa's headquarters, is the size of a small city. A thousand new army recruits, all children, parade through a maze of well planned roads, houses, schools, temples and hospitals. The soldiers, often just nine years old, are press-ganged into service - many will never see their homes again. If they run away one of their family is executed. In 1977 Khun Sa promised to stop the opium trade in exchange for independence from Burma. To prove his innocence Khun Sa shows the pits in the ground where drug addicts are reformed. But the whole area, from growers to addicts, relies on the drug trade. In the Temple of the Last Chance Buddhist monks detoxify pathetic young Thai drug addicts by administering a herb drink makes them throw up. (

  • so its ok for the USA to spend 1.5 million on EACH tomahawk missile fired into the middle east, use depleted uranium bullets on civilians, killing and destroying abroad whilst impoverishing their own people but poor people growing opium is bad? Or is it the powers that be want to keep drugs illegal so they can maintain their elite status? As if prohibition ever achieved anything but strengthen organized crime and corrupt politicians.

  • there are world shortages of opium why dont the world licence afghan farmers to produce and cut out the middlemen..btw khun sa has sold his franchise to burma and retired

  • LOL so the yanks go after this guy but not the ones next to their own country....

  • Opium is good and healthy! Anybody love is! Should be legalized!

  • @assinomen lol,it is good to not be arguing with someone for a change&the same to you mate..all the best!

  • @Bdiddly1 i think that leaves us in agreement, its nice not to have an argument i hate that!! sometimes though you just cant help it..anyway best wishes for the future!!

  • @assinomen -i am all for having heroin legalised&if people need it they can go get it,i dont see why they dont, every time an addict takes a hit it could end his life what with all the contaminants,i dunno about crack as thats a whole different thing(&gladly never has been my thing,i liked the odd line or a snowball years ago but crack wasn't strong enough for me!lol),anyway i am for legalising most drugs as i believe folk should be able to make there own decisions regarding what they partake in.

  • @assinomen -cheers mate, but it really isnt a prob for me anymore,i actually got sick to death "living"(you know what i mean, its an existance&no life at all, borrowing, robbing, your hit congealing in a barrel&you end up muscle popping&getting an abcess&then you still have to sort yourself out...fuck that, never again),nowadays i smoke some good weed&i am very happy with that,i dont drink now either&i am actually really fit as i do a lot of sport&eat well, thanks though mate, its appreciated.

  • @straty01 The CIA wants to be on top of the drug trade!

  • @assinomen you cannot prescribe for crack really.its a much worse drug..anyway stay on the wagon..

  • @Bdiddly1 4 years thats good going! ive heard the same about the h theses days. alot of people are on crack( and meth scripts) so i think the dealers ever resourceful(and greedy)have realised they can jump all over the gear .and people think its okay.in the past a lot of users had no scripts to start with so if gear was shite word would spread fast and no one would buy.consumer power! i feel sorry for addicts today and i think crack is much more of a problem today you cant prescribe

  • @assinomen -i think its cos when we had our first hit it was strong&felt good(i was on smack more than 9 years but have been clean for 4 so it was a while ago i got my first bit,but the quality of the stuff now is laughable(i still know plenty of people on smack who tell me this.)
