it has nothing to do with being lazy! it has to do with the sound. for some songs I like the sound a pick makes better than the sound plucking makes. for some songs I like slap better. it's not laziness it's a difference in oppinion/style.

Nice job at cranking out the song.
I'm just going to throw this out there, take it or leave it. If I were you I'd really work on my left hand technique. You've got the chops, it's just a matter of mastering the technique. Plus if you did I'm sure your tone would improve and the song would be easier to play.

believe or not its easier to get that pink stronger than the ring finger because the ring actually is missing a tendon bass players refer to it as the dumb finger

all you have to do to get the pinky strong is scale the bass like 20 times
