Memories is one of the many well composed themes from the movie Top Gun.
Flying for the Navy, Maverick and Goose, are the inseparable couple. Maverick, the outlaw pilot, punished for low passing the tower a few times, has a natural instinct for flying on one hand and needs to whitewash his legacy (his old man) on the other hand. Goose loves flying with Maverick and is the RIO (sitting in the back seat in the cockpit).
During a training dogfight , Maverick and Goose compete over a chasing and intercepting a SAINT (the supposedly predator aircraft) when the aircraft suffers an engine failure and falls into a flat spin. The engine failure could easily have happened due to Ice's greedy and aggressive behaviour for chasing the SAINT according to his miscalculations for proper distance that made him switch from the missiles to the guns and then fly away from the SAINT.
Suffering from the Flat Spin, Maverick pulls the eject handle, Maverick ejects immediately but Goose slams into cockpit and gets killed outright.
P.S. as far as I know, the RIO ejects before the pilot when either one ejects the aircraft ... so the idea of Maverick ejecting the bird before that of Goose seems to be ...well ... bullshit. BTW, .... Awesome dogfight scenes ....

Respect dude, May he rest in peace and be remembered always in good memories.

  • The F-14 and TF-30 have been cited as the worst aircraft/engine match up in history. The RIO (rear instrument officer) ejects first in the F-14, as can be seen in the very famous case of Kara Hultgreen.

At least 4 RIO's were killed due to ejecting from F-14s in flat spins. One of the TF-30 engines would stall, and the only way to prevent an immediate flat spin was to apply rudder. The spin would not produce enough air current to move the canopy from the RIO's ejection path.

thanks for interesting info David, yes, unfortunately that was the design flaw of an extremely expensive and high tech aircraft at the time.
