Hissing Cockroach freshly molted, with the heart beat very visible down the roach's back. If you look closely... you can see it pumping.... the heart of a cockroach is a tube-like structure with valves that can pump blood backwards or forwards through a roach's body. A roach's heart can even stop beating without the roach dying. There have been breakthroughs in medical research where scientists have actually created a new type of artificial heart inspired by the cockroach. Where a human heart uses 4 chambers, a cockroach's heart uses 13.

Sorry for the shaky camera, I was trying to get a good view of the heart pumping, without blocking the light or getting too much of a reflection from the light.

  • I really like the information included, it's neat learning about these guys!

  • Very nice! Bother that the light was in just the wrong place, though. Bet you could diffuse it with thin paper or something to cut down on the reflections.

  • Wow, that's pretty cool. Looks cuddly. :)
