Both of these experimental programs were begun initially after World War II as a means for quantifying the effects of various forms of radiation on mice and, by extrapolation, humans, to better understand the consequences of detonating nuclear weapons. The U.S. effort was directed by W. L. Russell and the British effort was directed by T. C. Carter (Green and Roderick, 1966).
