Sounds like a typical theatre orchestra from the period - Dominion Theatre orchestra sounded just like it when backing Sophie Tucker when she was in London.

Excellent early-30's material, and so unmistakably British! I really love these multiple selections on Decca that you've been posting recently; the 1932 Decca Artistes is another favorite. But I have to admit my ignorance; what exactly does "compered" mean? The jazzy art-deco "Salon Decca" sleeve in the background is totally cool as well - many thanks for posting this!

It means a Master of Ceremonies or announcer I suppose!!.Decca did some nice art-deco sleeves. I will try and show some more that I have.

Wonderful and sophisticated indeed! I had to look up "compere" as well... According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language it does mean" (Chiefly British v.intr. To serve as the master of ceremonies".

He did a very good job of it i thought.I don't know much about John Watt or Reginald Purdell but there is plenty of info on Anona Winn. I suspect the orchestra is a BBC orchestra though the label does not say.
