"Songs From The Shows' (Revue Songs ,Part 4)
Reginald Purdell & Anona Winn.
The BBC introduced "Songs from the Shows' to the National Programme on November 3rd 1931. Devised and compered by John Watt the show quickly became one of the most popular programmes broadcast.
Reginald Purdell (1896-1953) and Anona Winn (1902-1994) were regular guests on the show which included such artists as Olive Groves,Maurice Elwin, Tessa Deane, George Baker, Eve Becke and Elsie Carlisle
The songs are as follows;
'Tea for Two'
'Who',
'Dancing Time'.
Refined and cultured popular entertainment, a very fair description I would argue. Enjoy every groove!!

  • Excellent early-30's material, and so unmistakably British! I really love these multiple selections on Decca that you've been posting recently; the 1932 Decca Artistes is another favorite. But I have to admit my ignorance; what exactly does "compered" mean? The jazzy art-deco "Salon Decca" sleeve in the background is totally cool as well - many thanks for posting this!

  • It means a Master of Ceremonies or announcer I suppose!!.Decca did some nice art-deco sleeves. I will try and show some more that I have.

  • Wonderful and sophisticated indeed! I had to look up "compere" as well... According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language it does mean" (Chiefly British v.intr. To serve as the master of ceremonies".

  • He did a very good job of it i thought.I don't know much about John Watt or Reginald Purdell but there is plenty of info on Anona Winn. I suspect the orchestra is a BBC orchestra though the label does not say.

  • Sounds like a typical theatre orchestra from the period - Dominion Theatre orchestra sounded just like it when backing Sophie Tucker when she was in London.

  • Lovely,and i must upload my one sometime.

  • awesome!
