A burglar who was caught on CCTV stealing a laptop from student accommodation has been jailed for more than two years.

Peter Shaw, of Nidderdale, Wollaton, forced a window of a student room in Lenton Hall Drive before climbing in and snatching the computer.

The 19-year-old, who admitted the burglary at a previous hearing, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 7 October 2011 to 876 days in prison.

He had already served 143 days on remand which will count towards his sentence.

People can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime by taking a few simple steps.

• Ensure all windows and doors on properties and vehicles are locked and secure when unattended.
• Remove all valuables from view when leaving vehicles or property.
• Register mobile phones and electrical items free of charge with the Immobilise property database. If valuables are ever stolen, officers can check the database and return items to their rightful owners if registered. For more information visit www.immobilise.com.
• Download LoJack for Laptops tracking software. If stolen, the software can be used to help police locate the missing laptop.
