@NeilFraudstrong I think John became strangely attached to his superstar identity, precisely because he tried to demolish the attachment in an unnatural way. With his attempt to destroy his ego, he accomplished the opposite. He had a very healthy ego before attempting to destroy it. That's why I think his pain was so unnecessary. He didn't understand the concept of ego at all, this is clearly evidenced by what he says about it in interviews. Paul seems incredibly sane by contrast in 1980.

I really really really dig what Paul says at the end about the distance between the meals and the family. That's a very down to Earth thing to say and it just goes to show that he's still just a guy from Liverpool, not one half of the greatest songwriting team in musical history.
