Technically it's a controlled random following a set of rules. Once the rules are followed, a pattern somewhat emerges. What's important to note is that a set of rules are followed. It's the rules that dictate the tones and patterns that are ultimately created and perceived. It's very mathematical. A computer generated random is actually a math pattern where the formula used dictates the randomness. This is a little bit like that in some respects. These drummers use great skill here.
Really takes on a natural rhythm, like randomness to a tempo. Examples of what I mean would be like a small water fall, sprinkling rain, leaves in a steady breeze, etc. The sounds are in different random pitches, randomly changing patterns, yet follow a steady flow or pace when the players are combined. It's really nice, almost wind chime-like. Meditative for both the players and the listeners.

the tones are not random and the patterns are definitely not changing randomly...
