Sounds like the engine is not tunned. Adjustment is needed on the carburator needles to lean the engine a little bite and then it work and sound very diferent (for the better)

Yes. Running a little on the rich side and not to mention that the 1st gear was very tall. The Beetle normaly runs with smaller diameter slick tires for street use. Was just testing to see how it would do with the stock offroad tires in sand.
