On November 3, 1991, the Campbell's Soup Camden (New Jersey) Plant was imploded to make way for a GE Aerospace (previously RCA, now Lockheed Martin) facility. The plant, built in the late 1890's, was Campbell's flagship manufacturing facility and was the first in the world to produce condensed soups. Hundreds looked on, including many Campbell's retirees and their families, as the 100-year old plant was reduced to rubble in seconds. A Magee Media Presentation.

  • Pretty cool. The shot almost at the end, with the clock tower that looks like it's on top of the rubble- was that something behind the rubble or actually on top?

  • The clock tower is that of the old RCA building, only 1 of 2 of the original buildings in the once-huge RCA complex. The RCA plant built TVs, radios, the video camera that went to the moon with Apollo 11. The recording studio saw the likes of Enrico Caruso and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

"The Victor Building" (as in RCA Victor) is now luxury apartments and the glass windows with the dog Nipper ("His Master's Voice")still look out over Camden, the Delaware River, and Philadelphia.

  • OK, I am just in total shock. This happened 17 years ago? And only now I'm hearing about it?? This was arguably an American landmark. And they totally destroyed it? The towers and everything? Go ahead, laugh...but I'm speechless. Does Campbell's have ANYTHING in Camden now? Remember when "60 Minutes" filmed a segment there??

  • Campbell's HQ is still there. They will be expanding this, along with a business park, in 2009. Their commitment to Camden remains strong.

  • I worked there from the early 80's until the day they closed their doors. I was there for the inplosion. I cried like a baby when that building went down. So much history & so many memeories. I couldn't believe it was gone, just like that. It was a sad, sad day that I'll never forget :(

  • @PurpleSausage "fucking idiot"... wow... you've humbled me. The fact that I liked the way an implosion looked means I support jobs being exported abroad, apparently. I'm amazed by the high level of discourse on YouTube.

  • Oh noes!

  • @whateverlolawants If you mean the City Hall building with the big clock at the top, yep...its still there. :)

  • That's neat. So the clock tower is still there, then?

  • m,m, good.
