The point is change the positioning of your mouth to alter the sound. I don't know much about overtone singing, but I do understand that changing the way you position your mouth affects the feeling behind the sound. I have recently learned that it can help an unusually high or low note sound more like in the section you are performing in if you are in an ensemble.
