My Sophomore year in High School was spent going to Kent State University School which had only 400 kids but was reputed to have the highest SAT scores in the nation. The killings took place next door when the National Guard on the low playing field "fired a round over their heads" except they had live rounds and failed to account for the distance and rise to the higher area where kids were gathering.

The previous night my drummer Vince ( same guy that was the "long-hair" undercover DEA agent portrayed in the movie "Traffic" ! ) dragged his drunk roommate out of a local underground bar ( where Joe Wash, Chrissie Hynde, etc... played ) at about 1:30 AM or so. When he got distracted, his "roomie" had climbed up the pole and was hanging from the traffic light and wouldn't come down. By the time the bar cleared for 2 AM time, there were 2 cop cars and a hook and ladder trying to get him down. The ensuing "rukus" is what caused the problems that continued through the next day ( and that the Guardsmen had been having target practice earlier, but the live rounds were not collected ? )

If you click/expand on the description above, it contains the actual story that is behind what let up to the killings, as I went to KSUS as a sophomore in high school. I moved to California to train for my "stint" in the 1968 Olympics, however my "drummer" Vince was attending KSU and personally explained what had happened the night before ( detailed above ) that led to the killing. As far as I know this informations does NOT appear in any of the written history about the event.
