Another ignorant statement from an uneducated individual.

Maybe I'm wrong. My comment was based solely on the video I watched here. I apologize if I offended anyone with my post.

And? he did face consequences for this action. He was virtually black-balled from pro basketball after his playing days were through, he lost his wife, family and businesses and went bankrupt. He didn't exactly walk away unscathed...

Van Lier was another small guard (6' 1') with a chip on his shoulder..you didn't fuck with him or Murphy.

Whether he's a nice guy or not, he almost killed someone during a basketball game. I really don't care if you know the guy or not. People are entitled to their opinions and Kermit dealing merely with being traded and lambasted years later online are the least of what he probably deserved for his part in that unfortunate night. He may be a good guy who just made a bad decision, just like someone who drinks and drives and kills someone, but you face consequences for those decisions.

41 fights during the 1976-77 regular season that resulted in at least one ejection, that is.

Also plenty of fights (including some major ones like Calvin Murphy's fight with Sidney Wicks and a playoff melee in Golden State that featured Detroit's Bob Lanier going into the stands and throwing haymakers after a spectator had bopped the Pistons' M.L.Carr) that had NO ejections. Remember, in those days fighting did not always get a player ejected.

Wicks was in a number of them himself. One memorable one he had (aside from the aforementioned beatdown he got from Murphy) was in 1973 when he was with Portland. For the second time in a couple of weeks Wicks got into a fight with Chicago point guard Norm Van Lier, and this time Van Lier grabbed a folding chair and chased Wicks across the court, swinging it at Wicks a few times before it got broken up.

Conduct rules were vastly different too. Just prior to this season, the MOST the commissioner could fine/suspend a player for fighting was just $500 and five games. There had been 41 fights during the regular season and Maurice Lucas and Darryl Dawkins came to blows during the NBA finals. This would never be tolerated today and incidents like these, (where a man almost died) are the reasons why.

The NBA is those days was a lot different than today, obviously. Incidentally, this happens to be the same season that Kareem punched out Kent Benson for an elbow he threw in the first game of the season. At the time, the NBA was almost a minor league sport (a couple years before Magic & Bird), so TV viewership was pretty low and there was no ESPN to show how violent the game could get.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Read the book 'The PUNCH" and it explains it very well, it had nothing to do with being outplayed by Rudy T.

Speaking of fights, the man who got it a lot of them himself was little 'ol Calvin Murphy. I remember one game he beat the shit outta Sidney Wicks (who was 6' 9" & 225). He jumped up, grabbed his afro, yanked him down to his level and hit him with 4 or 5 quick right hands..people learned you didn't fuck Calvin cuz he knew what a lot of players didn't...how to fight.
