The inability of regional economies to share power distribution costs is a major stumbling block to reduction of the local cost of electricity. Kenya Power and Lighting Company's Chief Planning Manager David Mwangi says among the major setbacks in inter-connectivity of national grids is low power generation. Mwangi says there is a growing need for speedy implementation of strategies on energy that envisage an interconnected East Africa in 4 year's time.

  • @drsugarcane 2 we have the professional capacity? Yes&No. Can tap from Diaspora and develop local talent over time. I know Kenyans here in US working in this field. Is it viable? No. It costs Billions to develop one! Must have secure sites-and we don't. Need tones of money-and we don't-otherwise we would already have capacity Hydro, Solar, Wind etc World politics in the days of terror is more complicated esp with Somali border open as is, Am I patriotic still? Yes. I smell political posturing

  • @lumulixx you mentioned you are a power engineer. What will it take for Kenya to get Nuclear Energy? France had promised to help but do we have the capacity? We have Nuclear Science Department at UoN but are they upto the task?

  • @drsugarcane Can you imagine the face of Kenya if we started having people who make sense and know what they are doing based on previous record and not tribe? Politicians, many with dubious academic record would get these jobs to "fly the flag" and their tribesmen will kill each other over it! Insane. Am glad we have one outstanding kenyan like you out there!

  • @lumulixx or Mr Naikuni (Kenya Airways) as Transport Secretary

  • This is one thing that hopefully could be solved by the new constitution. Ministers for energy and Finance were by and large politicians not managers. They looked at drought as a political incovenience-they needed to appear to be doing something -not solving problems for long term purpose. Now we will hopefully have power engineers (which I am) as Energy Secretary and CPA's as Finance Secretary. Can you imagine if Mr Mwangi (Equity CEO) was also a Finance secretary! Priorities will be different!

  • Well said Mr Mwangi - these conferences are total yap-fests - no action plans and decisions ever come from them, not to mention the tons spent on per diems and hosting costs. Without reliable power/energy, development can only go so far.

  • Typical failed energy paradigm. Why trasport electricity all the way from Ethiopia to Eld/Nai/Mbs?These idiots think that only mega projects can solve energy problems. The truth is most energy is free and conversion into different forms is cheap until we start transporting it from Turkwell to Nairobi. The gov should invest more on clean micro energy sources and storage period.Rural homes in Kenya should only connect to the National Grid should to sell their domestic surplus not to buy

  • He just described Kenya! we clamor for assistance when our dam levels drop and then when it rains, people forget that the same cycle will happen again.
