This is so interesting. I made a documentary about Italian POWs held in the US during WWII called Prisoners In Paradise, that features interviews with surviving Italian POWs. The Italians were lucky and thrilled to be out of the war and brought to the US. After Italy signed the Armistice many of the POWs agreed to work w the But war is still war. The Italian officers who didnt agree to work w the US army there were starved in a way similar to what Sam describes. You can see a clip on you tube.
