I wasn't sure about putting this vid on Youtube after reading some of the negative comments that other guitarists had received from Youtube viewers, mainly about using a pick and not playing exactly the same as Mark Knopfler with thumb and fingers. All I can say is Mark Knopfler has a unique style and technique and it is true...you struggle to sound exactly the same, in some parts of this song Mark's guitar sounds almost like banjo chicken picking because of the way he uses his thumb and fingers, I could never replicate this with a pick but I feel more comfortable using one, I'm not sure if Mark Knopfler ever played with a pick, probably not, he obviously felt more comfortable using his fingers!
Backing track with vocals came off Youtube using MP3 converter.
I looked at loads of vids of Mark Knopfler playing this song, right from the late 1970's up till now, and I think every one was played differently lol! Mainly the licks and the ending were different, I've done it similar to the 1978 version.
I made a couple of mistakes but nothing too bad so I thought I would put it on here anyway. LOL

  • If I could play that good, I really wouldn't care what negative comments I got.

    Well done, great cover...

  • nice playing, anyway don't be ashamed about using a pick. i know for a fact mark knopler uses them for rythm lines when he writes, and always has one in his wallet. his finger pickin only came about after he was playing an acoustic with a warped neck, so that and light strings would make it play ok. but either way its a great song and you made a great cover

  • nice cover young man .exellent

  • exelent job,

  • Brilliant job. I know how much hard work goes into learning a song like that, and you played it brilliantly.

  • con helo muita gente grande que no mínimo "nunca vai fazer esse solo"

  • Jealousy is a terrible thing. I love the way you play...this, and everything else I've seen/heard you play. You, my young friend, will be a star, a guitar "god" and not too far into the future either! Hope you remember me, and send me some comp tickets. lol You go kid!! BTW...my last name is McCartney, and I know "great" when I hear it. :D)

  • Any of the idgits on here that are making wingnut comments about you not playing this like Knopfler are obviously copy cat nutjobs, that is, if they can EVEN copy him. You put your own spin on it, and...THAT'S what "art" is all about. Who the hell wants to be a "counterfeit" and just "copy" somebody else? Not only that...if I could play as well as you do, I'd tell 'em all to kiss me where the finger pickin' don't shine!! lol I'm 66, and I'm no where near your talent. You go kid!!! :D)
