On 6th March 1984 innocent protestant civilian William McConnell was murdered outside his home in front of his wife and three year old daughter.
He lived in Hawthornden Road in the eastern suburbs of Belfast, Northern Ireland and worked for the civil service. A neighbour and fellow civil servant, Owen Connelly, was sentenced to life for his murder after he admitted setting up Mr McConnell and helping his killers escape from the scene of their wicked crime.
This murder was one of hundreds of sectarian assassinations carried out by Irish Republicans in an attempt to ethnically cleanse protestants from of Northern Ireland.
They did not succeed.
