I made a Birdsmouth Mast, Sprit and Boom. I have more details at http://www.christinedemerchant.com/mast.html
Using old shelving and cutting out knots I ended up with strong, light and pretty spars. This is how I did it.
You can see why I never went into public speaking. I make good stuff though! Check out my carbon fiber mast experiment on my web site.
To figure out the proportions of the mast, you start with desired outside diameter. This you divide by 5 to give you the thickness of the pieces. Twice the thickness gives you the width of each piece. These figures are rough estimates so do your research!
My mast bends a bit but is not bendy! I tend to make my walls thicker than required.
YouTube upload modified the sound synchronization but the info is good.
I also made a carbon fiber mast. There is a link from my page.

  • Very cool! Nice boat, too. Ever thought about wrapping a coat of cloth and epoxy over the entire mast? Just for strength?

  • Thank you for sharing this video :)

  • Wonderful.

  • Absolutely brilliant! You are a very talented person. I'm thinking about building a sailing canoe, and you've given me a lot of inspiration. I visited your website and found it highly interesting and informative. Many thanks for sharing this.
