@JiujitsuZac99 it can but you would use too much strength and open your self up for a sweep

would this work from guard????

Gi chokes are beautiful, it's all about the carotid arteries. You should think less about the actual grip and focus on where the blade of your forearm lines up against his carotid. You position yourself there and grab wherever it allows you to keep your forearm in place. There are many different ways to finish the choke once you're there including this method, crunching inward, lifting the chin, etc. Opening up or "feeding" the collar with the other hand will allow you to get a deeper grip.

@Marastov Hmmm... Makes sense, thanks for the tip!

Keith said that I can try it on my friends.... yay!

That's why God invented elbows.

Even if you get reversed the person is still not out of danger of being choked.

What YOU should do when someone is going for a collar choke and they are leaning off to the side is to swivel yourself under them, to get their center of balance directly over you so you can upa them off. Swivel under and upa.

What's the difference?
partner im not trying to argue, and its not about winning. its about not hurting anyone. thats a true martial artist. and i agree controlling the power of your punches is the key. But again id rather choke the guy out. and use less energy. trust me bro i have street fought since 13 now im 25 and im pro. gnp is practical i agree. but street fighting is dangerous id rather avoid it now. but if i had no choice but to defend myself id rather choke the guy out. no harm to me or him. then i walk away
