These guys are amazing. I shot this on my Nokia N95, hope it comes across as strongly as it did in real life. Their voices were transformational. With around 30 chatty German tourists they started singing out of nowhere and completely changed the energy of the room. I could feel it right through me. Their bellowing voices were just so powerful, especially when they softened them right at the end. Wow.

Rebecca Campbell, copywriter, took on the Skype Nomad challenge to travel in perpetual motion for 33 days... Eating, sleeping and using Skype on the move!

I spoke to the guy centre right after and through broken English/Russian/German I think they said that the song is about men pulling a ship from the town to the water. Anyone speak Russian? Is that what they're singing about??? Instant message me the chorus translation. Or better yet, message the translation to the skype nomad chat room. It's always open.

  • The Song of the Volga Boatmen is a well-known traditional Russian song collected by Mily balakirev, and published in his book of folk songs. It is a genuine barge-haulers' shanty. Balakirev published it with only one verse (the first). The other two verses were added at a later date. The song, also called The Volga Burlak's Song, was inspired by Repin's famous painting, Burlaks on the Volga, depicting the suffering of the people in the depth of misery in Tsarist Russia.

  • Volga Boat Song Yo heave ho! Yo heave ho! Once more, once more, Yo heave ho! Pull the barge 'gainst the river's tide, CHORUS:Volga River stretching far and wide. Ai da da, ai da, ai da da, ai da, Pull the barge 'gainst the river's tide, Yo heave ho! Yo heave ho!Yo heave ho! Yo heave ho!As the barges float along,To the sun we sing our song... Yo heave ho! Yo heave ho! Volga, Volga our pride, Mighty stream so deep and wide...
