Edit - I originally reported this as a humpback, but upon further review, it appears we were amongst blues!

Heard there was a lot of blues and humpbacks in Monterey Bay chasing krill, so decided to paddle out and see if we could find any. Came in the midst of something between 2 and 6 different blues. Got this guy as he headed straight towards us - thankfully he decided to go deep when he did, as another surface or two would have brought him closer to us than I would have been comfortable with (which explains what I said).

I love ratings and comments, if you felt the urge...

  • The BlueWhale-Zoomed.avi video response is the same video, but zoomed in on the hale using video editing software.

  • After further review and conversations with others, I now agree that we were likely with blues. Amazing. I am trying to attach a video I took of humpbacks in 2007 as a video response - that should help show the size difference.

  • that's a blue whale, not a humpback. You can tell by the blow and shape of the tail....great catch.
