Rep. Judy Chu spoke on the House Floor on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, urging her colleagues to support H. Res. 1032, introduced by Rep. Chu to honor Agustin Roberto "Bobby" Salcedo, the El Monte School Board member who was tragically slain in Durango, Mexico on New Years Eve 2009. The resolution, which passed unanimously, also urges the House and the Obama Administration to extend the Merida Initiative, a U.S.-Mexican agreement passed in 2007 and expiring this year, that provides more than a billion dollars in U.S. support to help Mexico fight drug violence. Rep. Chu is asking that the initiative be extended beyond 2010 and to focus its efforts on shutting down the drug cartels' money laundering operations, increasing technological assistance to Mexican local and state law enforcement, and providing U.S. training of Mexican judges, prosecutors and investigators to weed out corruption.
