Nowhere Boy, a biopic about John Lennons childhood, has been picked up by the Weinstein Company, Variety reports. The project is two weeks into filming with Aaron Johnson, who played the young Ed Norton in The Illusionist, in the role of Lennon and English Patient star Kristin Scott Thomas portraying the Beatles aunt, who battled Lennons mother Julia for custody. The film will examine the effects each woman and their custody fight had on the young musician. Variety says the movie will also laser in on Lennons bond with Paul McCartney, and concludes when the Beatles leave Liverpool and head off to Germany.

Taking its title from Rubber Souls Nowhere Man, Nowhere Boy will be directed by Sam Taylor Wood, who helmed the Buzzcocks-inspired Love You More, with a screenplay penned by Joy Division biopic Control writer Matt Greenhalgh. The screenplay was based on the memoir written by Julia Baird, Lennons half-sister. The story of John Lennons childhood has never been told, and now Beatles fans will be able to gain insight into his fascinating life, Weinstein Company president of theatrical films Tom Ortenberg said in a press release. The company plans to release the movie in time for consideration for awards season, with a wider release to follow in January 2010.

According to a press release issued by the Weinstein Company that appears in full at Variety, the films full synopsis is: John Lennon is an ordinary fifteen year old boy on the streets of Liverpool. Funny, smart, naughty, a real edge to him. But life is not simple for John — he grew up in a family of secrets and was raised by his Aunt Mimi from the age of five. When he is suddenly reacquainted with his mother, Julia, they form an unbreakable bond. A bitter war rages between the two sisters for Johns love. Faced with bringing it to an end, he learns the secret heartbreak of his past. But his mother gives him one great gift — music. A wayward boy finds his voice, and walks into the Beatles.

Nowhere Boy is just the latest in a long line of films that examine the Beatles and their music in some capacity. There was also Backbeat, the TV movie Two of Us, Across the Universe, I Am Sam, I Wanna Hold Your Hand and of course, A Hard Days Night and Help!.

  • @Korn1holio well, the fact is, that it was a John lennon movie, not a Beatle one

  • It was shit. That woman should never direct another Beatles movie again. "Backbeat" was Waaaaaaaaay better.

  • @IvyNirvana I love your user name btw, nirvana is wonderful. But towards the end, theres this part where there all on the bus and paul goes " Here john, i wan't you to meet my friend from school, george, hes a great guitar player. He knows more than us put together" and thats all you see of george. I like it better that way because we all know what happens!

  • George Harrison is the best beatle, why the heck they leave him out.

  • @musiclistner94 actually there is..

  • @BoingBoingallen George is in the film. Remember the bus scene where he was introduced by Paul?

Anyway, this was in the begining when the band was called, The Quarrymen, later the Silver Beatles, and then just The Beatles. John and Paul said they got the idea of calling their band, The Beatles from Buddy Holly & the Crickets. There was a novelty called, "I Was Bitten by a Beatle Bug!" which was a song about how a guy's girlfriend was in love with "The Beatles." Anyone remember this song?

  • @Musicland1957 Yeah, that's why it's called Nowhere Boy - John wrote a song called Nowhere Man, and this is meant to be "the boy behind the man behind the Beatles". I think it's really good and depicts John Lennon really well

  • @Rougeification Thanks for letting me know. I have been a Beatles fan since I was a kid when I first saw "A Hard Days Night" at the show. I had just bought the Double Fantasy Album and was shocked by the news the night I heard he had died. This film gave me a little insight into John Lennon's early life before he became famous.
