If ever anyone could doubt the sheer beauty of Marty Robbin's singing, just let them hear him singing this old 19th century ballad. I find it breathtakingly beautiful and what a master of his craft Marty Robbins was.

  • I totally agree with your comment jshalom. I don't think he really achieved the recognition or record sales his undoubted talents deserved.

  • i agree! with a voice of pure gold, he made music come alive, no matter what he sang. love all his songs and love all your posts too tarquin. my no. 1 favorite singer.

  • Why he is not more people's favourite singer puzzles me. He was such a great vocalist/songwriter with great charisma.

I appreciate your continued comments granny.

  • Thanks Richard for your most gracious comments. This is my favourite Marty Robbins track without doubt. The rendition of this exquisite old ballad always moves me as well.

How sad that it was locked away in the vaults of Columbia records and never saw the light of day in Marty's lifetime.

Thanks once again for your kind and sincere comment.

  • What a beautiful song. What a beautiful man. May he rest in peace. Thanks for posting

  • This is my favourite Marty Robbins recording of all time. This was him at his greatest, just the guitar of Grady Martin accompanying him and a very beautiful old song sung with such sincerity and feeling. He had a way with a song that very few could match in my opinion. Thanks kallisann.

  • Every song this man did was at his best. But!!!! if you want to hear this man hit notes not other man has ever hit..listen to him sing "Don"t worry". He's an icon.

  • Sorry tarquin 45. You're wrong. Marty Robbins is the favorite of millions of fans around the world. His records have sold millions. He was the first country artist to cross over to pop.

  • Any singer who has sang with more heart, soul, depth and feeling than this gentleman I don't know and I've heard just about all of them/thanks again Tarq

  • His ballad vocals were/are sublime.

  • @foxygranpa6 thanks for the info. i checked on youtube and indeed there is a version by jo stafford & gordon macrae - - yes, curly from "oklahoma!"

  • @wallofvideo:

According to what I've read, this song was written in 1833. There was a duet of this song sung by Jo Stafford and a man whose name escapes me at the moment. That version was beautiful, and Marty Robbins and Elvis Presley were probably both familiar with it, since that version was highly acclaimed. Quite a few versions exist---or at least they did, long, long ago.

  • something about the vocals here sounds similar to early elvis. was there some earlier vocalist that both marty & elvis cited as an inspiration?

  • we're singing this in my chorus class!!! i like this version a lot

  • @almxx I agree but it's funny, Martin never put himself in a 'catagory'...he mostly loved the love songs and the cowboy songs....and even more, he just loved to sing. When he first started singing in Arizona, he sang under an alias because he was ahamed for his mother to know he was a singer. He worshipped his mom (Cigarettes and Coffee Blues was written about her after his father ran off). After a while, he started recording under the name of Marty Robbins (real name Robinson). Best singer!
