Ryuki's ending makes sense in its own story because of what the whole story has been depicting throughout: it's a senseless battle for the sake of one life. The ending resets the whole thing to avoid all the tragedy.

And the Highlander comparison doesn't really hold. The only similarity is the "Battle Royale" trope; what comes afterwards is vastly different. "Nothing more" is a severe understatement..

Actually, there's one thing you don't seem to know about the "low mainstream reception" excuse you've been going on and on about: Among Heisei KR series up to 2011, Ryuki has the 3rd highest AVERAGE rating (9.4%) after Agito and Kuuga, and 3rd highest PER-EPISODE rating (#3; 12.9%).

And "honest" plot? Both Ryuki and DK decided on which path they'll take for story and stick to it to the very end; both are honest. And Ryuki's ending is meant to absolve all the terrible events.
