On December 14, 2009, United States Rear Admiral William Brown joined Deputy Chief of Mission Tom Navratil, Minister of Defense Zoran Konjanovski and Chief of Defense, Lt. General Miroslav Stojanovski to present medals to 31 soldiers from the Army of Macedonia for their distinguished service in Iraq. Four soldiers received Meritorious Service Medals and 27 received Army Commendation Medals. 490 Soldiers from Macedonia served in Iraq from 2003 until the end of 2008 and received 163 awards for distinguishing themselves in this important mission. Both Admiral Brown and Deputy Chief of Mission Navratil praised the soldiers not only for their brave service but also for serving as excellent and professional representatives of Macedonia.
A large number of family members were present for the presentation of the medals - and each speaker thanked the families for their support of the soldiers. The Admiral and the Minister of Defense also underscored Macedonias continuing commitment to Multinational Peacekeeping efforts, highlighting the troops currently serving in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Lebanon.
In closing, Admiral Brown again thanked Macedonia for its continuing commitment to Euro-Atlantic integration and for the service of its outstanding soldiers in important missions throughout the world.
