Kinnikumania 2009 Highlights! 30 Years of Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy!

The Toei Animation production company hosted Kinnikumania 2009 — an entire "real" professional wrestling event inspired by the Kinnikuman (Ultimate Muscle) anime and manga franchise. Takashi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai's original manga revolved around a farcical wrestler who fought opponents and evildoers inside and outside the ring. The event will be held at the JCB Hall in Tokyo Dome City on May 29 to mark the 30th anniversary of the manga.

The Kinnikuman figures were imported into the United States under the "M.U.S.C.L.E" brand name in the 1980s.

Viz Media then released Takashi Shimada and Yoshinori Nakai's Kinnikuman Nisei - Second Generations manga sequel in North America as Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy, and 4Kids released the anime version on television.

On New Year's Eve last year, fighting celebrity Bob Sapp fought Akihiko Tanaka, a free-style wrestler who dressed as the Kinniku Mantaro manga character for their mixed martial arts bout.

The main event was "Minowaman" vs Kinnikuman/King Muscle. Highlights Include the "real life" Choujin Crown Tag Team Tournament, featuring a host of familiar faces in the Kinnikuman/Ultimate Muscle universe.

I'm trying to find it...however, from what I've seen, the event wasn't broadcast on TV, but was recorded - maybe for a DVD release. I'll keep looking...and here's hoping they have another Kinnikumania!

I agree - the main event should've been TIger Mask(w/ the Actual Tiger Mask) vs Kinnikuman and Liger vs Robin Mask....or just a three way battle between the main characters....

Yeah, I liked the event, just that they didn't cast wrestlers anatomically correct - Kinnikuman looked skinnier than Minowa, and he's supposed to be the main event!...Still, awesome comeback with the Kinniku Buster at the end.

I guess the directors of the event felt it's been 30 years since the creation of the manga...

I couldn't hear some of it, although I did hear someting about him telling Minowa something about the fighting spirit...I'll see if I can find a translation, or I'll make it a summer project...

@jinray Yeah, but unfortunately, if you really think about it, trying to find wrestlers with physiques like the Ultimate Warrior, who can move around in the ring like AJ Styles is next to impossible these days.
