Episode 9 of James Burke's most well-known series "Connections" which explores the surprising and unexpected ways that our modern technological world came into existence. Each episode investigates the background of usually one particular modern invention and how it came into being. These explorations are an attempt to locate the "connections" between various historical figures who seemingly had nothing to do with each other in their own times, however once connected, these same figures combined to produce some of the most profound impacts on our modern day world; in a "1+1=3" type of way.

It is this type of investigation that is the core idea behind the Knowledge Web project, whereby sophisticated software is being developed to attempt to discover these subtle interconnections automatically. See http://k-web.org.

  • what is the music playing at the end of this part?

  • Haha. No idea. I've asked this question many times on other videos and suggested that as a YT feature. I mean they seem to specialize in audio content ID matching. My idea was that it could be put to good use too!

  • The music is by Faure (pron, faw-ray) its called Pavane. He was a French impressionist composer.

  • Would it be Fauré then?

  • LOL "Fine, that was alright, except that while you were doing all this... they shot you."

    brilliant.

  • Haha... I forgot about that bit. Mr. Burke can be quite a comedian at times!

  • I used to excel in school at certain subjects because of this series. It not only made learning entertaining, but the way the information was delivered made it very hard to forget. Every event being linked to every other one made it as easy as retracing the steps in my mind.

I wished normal school would be this effective, sadly, it never was.

  • loved the vid

  • @Bondianwolf It is the same tune, with us thieving americans, as usual, stealing the tune from the British, as their version, "God save the King(or Queen)" predates "My Country Tis of Thee" by at least 50-60 YEARS, if not more.

  • Leonard Digges - inventor of the theodolite - also invented the reflecting telescope. Mention of his "perspective glasse" - with a magnification of x11 - appears as early as 1578, fully thirty years prior to Lipperhey's patent.

  • I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that a little diddy called "My Country Tis of Thee" is based on this tune. I say "based" because "plagiarized" sounds so unpleasant.
