  • Love these videos. I am against cocking while still in holster as shown. I practice quick draw. When I was younger was very serious. Practiced empty for a long time, then tried live rounds. If you cock it as you grab it while in the holster as shown, in my opinion, it is too easy to bump that tigger or slip off the thumb. In '79 and I spent 7 days in the hospital where that slug hit me in the calf. I went to cocking it once it clears the holster on the way up and fire as it comes level.

  • @DMEII Thanks for posting. None of these techniques are for use with live ammo. It doesn't even take a physical mistake- if the trigger breaks, the gun (Colt SAA design) goes bang. Thumbcocking while in the holster is NEVER done with real-world, live ammo situations.

    These are techniques of the SPORT of fast draw, that grew out of the western movies. They are used with blanks or primer-powered wax bullets ONLY. Even then, there are risks, but they are reasonable if one is well practiced.

  • Chris;

    Another question; lined or unlined for holster?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  • @kamasutraguy-- Lined? If you mean with leather, yes, but there's much more to it. This rig is lined with steel plate between the inside and outside layers of leather, throughout the holster "boot" (not just around the cylinder), and it extends up through the shank into the oval hip plate. The leg tie-down is actually unnecessary. When properly fitted, this rig is is solid as a rock. That kind of consistancy makes everything else that follows, a whole lot easier.

  • Thanks for your quick answer. I am about to start on Fast Draw sport. What kind of gun is you recommendation for beginners, Colt, Ruger Vaquero or Uberti?

    Should I start practicing draw or accuracy first?

  • @mpietro3000

    1) Get a Ruger New Vaquero in .45LC, 4-5/8" bbl.

    2) practice slow fire hipshooting first, find and get comfortable with your natural point of aim.

    3) THEN practice drawing slowly, getting to that natural hip-shooting position SMOOTHLY.

  • I got one of the new vaqueros and I've been getting pretty good shooting from the hip, what modifications should I have put on the gun to make it a really slick quick draw system?
