CASE STUDY: Historic White Pines in Woodstock, Vermont

Our team of professional arborists was hired to do a property assessment by a new home owner in Woodstock, Vermont. During the project, we discovered extreme damage to some apparently healthy pioneer trees on River Street.

It turned out these trees were mostly compromised due to poor landscaping practices while in the hands of the previous owner. The property in question was bordered by four very large, very old white pines which averaged around 115 feet in height and 40 inches in diameter.

Although the white pines appeared at first glance to be in excellent health, there was evidence of root strafing, reduced vigor, trunk decay, decay fungi and slowed healing where limbs were pruned in years past. After an initial inspection we brought in consulting arborist Bill Devoss, and discovered as we had suspected that all four trees posed a danger to the homeowner and River Street nearby.

By taking core samples of the trees and identifying the fungi, we were able to determine these trees were a risk due to decay and internal trunk hollows well before we had to make the unfortunate decision to cut them down.

Working with our 70 ton crane operator, we determined the most expedient way to do the job. We sectioned the trees in 4 to 5 pieces for safety since they weighed eighty-five-hundred to ten thousand pounds a piece—the heaviest being nineteen thousand pounds. We harnessed the trees to the crane ball and made our cuts using 40 inch chainsaws—in the end this was no small job.

These historic trees lived for over 125 years and met an unfortunate demise due to poor planning and practice. Although this is part of the business, it is a shame to see such majestic and stately trees meet an early end due to poor landscaping practice and property planning.
