  • Thanks for posting this, monarchistHUN. Kaiser Franz Josef (1830-1916) was a remarkable man and it is incredible to hear his voice after all these years. You are probably aware that he features in Joseph Roth's novel "The Radetzky March" but for the best first-hand description of the Kaiser and the Austro-Hungarian court, may I recommend Admiral Miklos Horthy's memoirs? Look on Wikipedia; there's an external link to them.

    Danke schon!

  • I don't know more than a few words of German, but you can instantly grasp the benign, grandfatherly nature of Emperor Franz Josef from this historic recording. (No wonder his subjects adored him.) Contrast his voice with that of Kaiser Wilhelm II in his surviving recordings... he virtually barks out his words. Thanks for posting this!

  • This guy lost more wars than he started, I think.

  • @67nairb He wasn't alive anymore? It was Kaiser Karl IV who occuppied the throne. Kaiser Franz Joseph saw the start of the war, but never saw the end of it...

But you can't possibly deny that Franz Joseph wasn't loved - because in fact, he was.

  • @SirCyrano If his subjects adored him so much then why did the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapse after World War I? Why did his polyglot empire break apart into several nation states?

  • Fascinating.

  • Denen, die Fragen über seine Sprechart gestellt haben, Wikipedia hat mir etwas erklärt, als ich „Schönbrunner Deutsch“ gesucht hab/To those who've asked about his manner of speaking, the article on "Austrian German," particularly the section on the "Former Standard" (which actually brought me here) cleared some things up for me.

Monarchie

  • ES LEBE ÖSTERREICH!

ES LEBE TIROL VON KUFSTEIN BIS ZUM GRADASEE!

  • @AndreDevecserii It's very similar. The only thing really different is the more nasal tone.

  • How similar is this to Standard German? I heard that what the Habsburg family spoke was a lot closer to it than what Austrians in general speak natively.
