David Warner is the editor of Creative Loafing, and Brian Ries is the Loaf's food critic. They talk about "The Food Stamp Diet." The subject is inspired by the recent trend in which politicians and the like try to live on a typical food-stamp allotment for a week. Brian tries it. He also interviews people about the nutritional and economic challenges food stamps present. Tampa Bay's Media Talk co-hosts: Janet Sherer & Rob Tiisler.

By-the-way there are over one half million calories within the food items listed above from Sams. On the average 2,000 calorie per day diet that would be enough for 250 days for 1 person, or 25 days for 10 people, if you do not waste any. With this combination of food besides the daily macaroni and cheese, rice and beans you can make bread, tortillas, pancakes, birthday cakes, muffins, biscuits, pop corn snacks, popcorn ball treats, waffles, cookies, quesadillas, cheese over rice

    1. if u are going to go on & on with a diatribe please # your comments so they read in order.

    2. "overeating" is expressed by the amount of body fat you carry. If u have a lot of fat than u r eating 2 much & should cut back.

    3. yes everyone is different.

    4. look around u - your taxes do not just go for food stamps. they pay for police, FD, paramedics, life guards, roads, p. defender, welfare, infrastructure, street sweeping, teachers, books, and stuff you never even thing about

  • cont. So What I did is that I would hold it for the next month. Then the next month I could buy fruit( Canned) and Vegies (canned). But everyone has different needs and different physical systems. However in all reality, I'm glad that I went through that hard time, so I could understand what people go through. It was embarrassing and sad, but I learned a lot. So keep being angry at those who were once like you, while the gov takes more than it needs and you say not a peep. peace and mercy.

  • Cont... So now the person has 103.00 left. At save o lot and aldi, they have pot pies for $.50 so you can get 20 of them for 10.00 They are filled with salt and corn oil, but your main concern is eating for the full month. Now were down to about 93.00 . So we get some milk and whole grain cereal that's about 8.00 at the cheapest store. Now some balona about a 1.00 a pack so you get 5 packs, onions and potatoes about 7.00. Now we're down to about 65.00. continue....

  • @anyname666 But that's the thing Your taxes are not going to these people. These people (Like my self at one time) Already HAD JOBS and PAID TAXES Now that they Need help They get it in the form of food stamps. Their own taxes have already been paid. The government has already taken WAY more than it gives back to them. They are stretching their stamps for the month. They buy flour, pasta, bread beans, sugar. At the cheapest store that's already about $30.00 for the whole month. continue....

  • @anyname666 In a perfect world that's true, but not everyone who is fat, is fat because of over eating. So your theory is wrong. You should research this subject. However I really believe that you just want to huff for the sake of huffing.

  • @2012lav

If someone is FAT than they are FAT and it does not make any difference when or how they got FAT. If they were FAT before they needed food stamps then they should eat less during the lean times while they need food stamps. If they got FAT by making the wrong choices at the food trough then it is hard for me to understand why I need to pay taxes to assist them while continuing to make the wrong choices. No more food stamps for FAT people. Weigh in B4 U get yer stamps.

  • @2012lavender

The very use of the term FAT denotes being overweight. If u r overweight then u have body stores of fat cells to help u through the lean times. Dieting is the thing that helps those who r overweight. Dieting by definition is the intake of fewer calories. Fewer calories consumed indicated less eating. And of course if u eat less than u don't need to buy as much food. If u do not need to buy as much food than u need less money from your "budget" for that very food. NO food stamps

  • @anyname666 1/3 qualify but 1/6 is actually receiving food stamps. you say fat people don't need food. Maybe they were fat before they needed foodstamps. Maybe they've gotten fat from having to eat cheap processed corn oil filled foods along with pasta, starches and low grade, salt filled canned goods. The average person on food stamps get 133.00 per month. The foods you've mentioned are all cheap foods. You just want to be angry at people whom you don't know. Go huff somewhere else.

  • @2012lavender

    bye or not

Since 1/3rd of the American Public is eligible for food stamps you can see that the # is well over 50% don't need it.

watch the videos on YouTube and you will see that the mjority of the people are FAT

if they are FAT then they do not NEED food. and therefore do not need food stamps.

Look into their carts on the YouTube vids. you see Sodas, convienance foods, pop tarts, toaster eggos, microwave pop corn..... this is not a person who NEEDS food stamps just a user/abuser

  • @anyname666 If you know you qualify, then you must have looked into the idea of receiving or have applied. LOL. Do you have any statististical facts about 50 percent, or did that just spring from your brain? If an Honest person worked honestly and the Gov. Took their honest money in the form of taxes, shouldn't the honest person get honest assistance when they honestly need help? Anyway, stay brainwashed. I'm done. bye.
