Assalamu 'alaikum ~ peace be upon you.
Qur'an Chapter 33 Verse 56.
In the Name of Allâh, the Most
Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
Allâh sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (Muhammad sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) and also His angels too (ask Allâh to bless and forgive him).
O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allâh to bless) him (Muhammad sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islâmic way of greeting (salutation i.e. AsSalâmu 'Alaikum).
❤`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) saying: "Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt my mention, Allah will exalt his mention ten times.''
[Muslim].
Commentary: Recitation of Salat upon the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) means the recitation of benediction. Such as the one recited in Salat "O Allah, have mercy on Muhammad...)'' It is a prayer for mercy and exaltation of the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) which is highly meritorious. (At-Tirmidhi, Hadith Hasan).
❤Abu Mas`ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were sitting in the company of Sa`d bin `Ubadah (May Allah be pleased with him), when the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) came to us. Bashir bin Sa`d said: "O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to supplicate for you, but how should we do that?'' The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) kept silent. We were much perturbed over his silence and we wished he did not asked him this question. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "Say: `O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praised, the Glorified,' and the method of greeting (i.e., Salam) is as you know.''
[Muslim].
Commentary: In this Hadith, the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) has showed us that the manner of offering Salam was the same as the one mentioned in the previous Hadith. "Al'' means the wives of the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) and those of his relatives who were from Banu Hashim and Banu `Abdul-Muttalib and had embraced Islam. Some scholars are of the opinion that it is general and applies to all his followers.
❤`Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned but he does not supplicate for me.''
[At-Tirmidhi].
Commentary: "Miser'' means to deny someone his right. If a Muslim does not supplicate for him upon hearing his name, then such a person is a miser beyond doubt. Thus, we learn that one must recite Salat when he hears the name of the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam). It is sufficient to say May Allah render him from evil and exalt his mention) for this purpose.
Insha'Allah we benefit from the Ahadith && implement the guidance given in them by Rasul Allah (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) to the best of our ability.
Ahadith obtained from "Riyad-us-Saliheen" compiled by al-Imam an-Nawawi (rahmatullah 'alayh).

@kshahid786: Sorry but you've misunderstood, saying "Allahumma Baarik" just means "O Allah bless" whereas "wa Baarik" means "And bless" - Obviously we are supplicating to Allah so it isn't necessary to repeat Allahumma as it's been said once at the beginning as in "Allahuma Salli 'Ala."
Also, if you look at the 2nd hadith in more info box, this is how the Prophet (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam) taught his Sahaba to send Salutations, Blessings, Prayers upon himself (sal Allahu 'alaihi wasallam).
