@Pathtith I assume this is partially an intentional parody by Gilbert - in Iolanthe at least, the Peers are supposed to be semi-ridiculous.

Remember that many producers like to retain a touch of the Victorian, and declamatory style and precsion of diction fits with this.

Nice. But WHY is G&S dialogue always ohhh-verrrrr prrrrro-nownccced...? Why not just speak it normally as in modern drama?
