Train accident - Croatia - 24.07.2009 - Nesreća nagibnog vlaka blizu Kaštela

Inter City train crashed. Tracks were covered with some liquid that is used to prevent fire. But that liquid was not supposed to be on the tracks but between them.

Reporters said that braking system failed. But it turned out that breaking system was working perfectly. But it was useless! It was like driving on the ice. And track is going downhill on that part, so it was impossible to stop the train.

That other small train that came down and almost killed rescuers was abandoned.
Only 40 minutes before that accident they went uphill and sprayed that liquid to prevent wooden parts of construction under tracks to ignite. When they heared what happened, they got orders to go down and help. But they also realised that this has something to do with them. So they came very carefully to the part where they stopped spraying that liquid (only 5 kph), but when they touched those sprayed tracks, their locomotive also lost control and went downhill event though brakes were activated. So they jumped out of that train (minor injuries), and contacted rescuers with radio that there is another locomotive coming down out of control.

Thank God, no one was killed. But in the crash of that Inter City train, 6 people died immediately, and 55 people were transported to hospital.

This accident happend in Rudine, near Kaštel Stari (only 20 minutes away from Split, second biggest city in Croatia) when the train was coming down from mountains to Adriatic sea (145 meters above the sea level).
