Here's another safety tip - adjust your bike to be a 'vertical recumbent' - at almost no cost. You can then much more powerfully pedal out of trouble (e.g. across wide intersections). See the video called World's cheapest safest do-it-yourself 'vertical recumbent' bicycle.

excellent movie, it is just what we want for our teaching package on Cycling Safety. If we can get the script attached here, second english language learners will benefit even more.

Both adults and kids need to understand a few important things about safety and responsibility when riding a bike.

Just because the law says you have the right of way, does not make you right. Versus a car or anything faster and bigger you don't stand a chance.

After all what good is it if you're the one hurt, even though you were in the right. Point is, would you rather be right or safe? I think you get it.

You can only be as safe as you,and only you make it. Exercise good judgement, period.

Good advice. I would like to add a couple points. Don’t ride knobby, or off-road, tires on the street. They have less traction and are more prone to punctures. Keep a tire repair kit with you at all times. Don’t use headphones or earbuds. Hearing is your first line of defense. Don’t ride while carrying stuff in your hands or hanging from the handlebars. In groups, ride single file. Enjoy!
