Hunger Striking Former Taiwan President Hospitalized

And in Taiwan, former president Chen Shui-bian is hospitalized after 108 hours of hunger strike in jail. He was protesting money laundering charges brought on him last week.
According to his lawyer, former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian was hospitalized on Sunday after going on a hunger strike to protest his arrest.

Chen was taken to Far Eastern Hospital after going for 108 hours without food.

The ambulance backed directly into the emergency room upon arrival as police guarded outside of the emergency room entrance. The hospital said Chen is dehydrated, but his life is not in danger.

"There is slight chest discomfort, but so far we found nothing unusual with the heart."

The former president began his hunger strike on Wednesday, the day he was formally arrested in connection with several cases, including one involving alleged money laundering and another the misuse of government funds.

His lawyer said that Chen wants to protest the judicial system's injustice toward him, and among a list of ten grievances, Chen also described Taiwan's legal system as "dead" and said he mourned what he described as a regression in Taiwan's democracy.

The prosecutor's office has yet to formally indict Chen, but has listed five possible charges: graft, seizure of public assets, taking advantage of office to illegally obtain public assets, taking bribes and forgery.
