The Words to Stir the Soul events spotlight some of the region's best writing by providing a unique opportunity for both readers and attendees to deepen their appreciation of the region in which we live.

This year, the Center of the American West's Words to Stir the Soul program features the work of Boulder-based poet and essayist, Reg Saner. Saner was born in 1931 in a farm town on the Illinois prairie. He first saw mountains during military service when he was sent to Alaska for alpine and arctic survival training. After combat duty as an infantry platoon leader in the Korean War, he studied Renaissance culture at the University of Illinois, and as a Fulbright Scholar in Florence, Italy. After honeymooning in Colorado, he and his wife decided to move there. In September of 1962, Saner began teaching in CU-Boulder's English department. Following a highly productive 37-year tenure, he retired from the world of teaching to focus on his writings about the Western landscape.
