Political scientist Russell Arben Fox examines Mitt Romney's handling of his Mormon faith in regards to his campaign for the 2008 Republican nomination.

-----

"Mormonism and American Politics: Mitt, Mormonism, and the Media."

Mitt Romney's run for the White House raises perennial questions about the place of religion in the public square and offers scholars an interesting occasion to reconsider the relationship between religion and American politics. The media has made much of Romney’s religion and so have some sectors of the American public. What can we learn from public attitudes about Mormonism? Are the religious beliefs of a political candidate relevant to serving in office, and if so, how? Are there political implications to Mormonism? Do the careers of other Mormon politicians shed any light on this question? In what ways is Mormonism politically comparable to other religious groups? - Center for the Study of Religion, Princeton University

Russell Arben Fox is assistant professor of political science and director of the Political Science program at Friends University in Wichita, KS. He received his Ph.D. in Political Theory from Catholic University of America. He has published articles on religion, education, American political thought, East Asian political thought, communitarianism, and nationalism in Polity, The Review of Politics, Philosophy East and West, American Behavioral Scientist, Theory and Research in Education, and The Responsive Community. He has been an active participant in Mormon internet symposiums and blogging since 2003.

  • If the 3 Nephites and John the beloved never tasted of death, this means: a) The priesthood was never lost from the earth. b) No complete apostasy could have occurred. c) No need for a priesthood restoration from heaven and no need for J Smith. d) Joseph fabricated the whole damn thing and fabricated Mormonism.

This is one of many reasons why orthodox christianity struggles with Mormonism

  • @ldsdaniel in this video he claims that one can not know where he stands on issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and such basic issues the church has made numerous responses including the official proclaimation on the family back in the 90s. Conspiracy theorists and some journalists would probably always think there was something hidden or unknowable by the very nature of their mindset.

  • @tnfellow it's actually called the Urim and Thummim and it's also listed in the Bible as a sacred artifact...according to the Bible. Might want to read the book you profess to believe in before bashing on other peoples' faith.

  • ...did joseph smith use the stones and bow (umum /thumum) to translate what he saw in his hat, in the begining of the book of mormon, that's Scorcery - or witchcraft according to the bible...

  • This guy is fairly clueless about the LDS faith and policies. Regarding his comment about church leaders not producing declarations about homosexual and abortion issues, he must not be familiar with the Proclamation to the World on the Family as put forth by the First Presidency. For this document in fact tells of the position the Chruch and the Lord take on these issues. In addition, every 6 months, they give 10 hours of instruction concerning all issues in the world today.

  • Leave the Saints alone. I've left the Church and all the anti-LDS, anti-Mormon stuff is so very shallow!

I've been hanging out with non-Mormons and there are actually people who believe that Mitt Romney can save America out of the ditch we're in right now because of his political and corporate past. Now, that's depth.
