Natural Selection 2 is a first person shooter cross real time strategy game being developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, a small ~6 person team in California. It is a stand alone sequel to the popular Half-Life modification Natural Selection.

The game is currently in beta, and is available to purchase for US$35. Purchasing the game gives access to the beta and the full release when the game is finished. The beta is patched regularly, at a minimum every two weeks.

NS2 pits the human marine Frontiersmen against the varied alien Kharaa. The two teams, of up to 16 players each, vie for control of strategic points of large and small maps, with the goal of wiping each other out.

Each team has a commander, who views the game from a real time strategy perspective. The rest of the team plays from a first person shooter perspective. Players may seamlessly enter and exit commander mode throughout the game. Teams may build a large variety of structures to aid them in controlling territory, upgrading equipment, and unlocking new lifeforms, weapons, abilities, and support units.

The game is built on a brand new, UWE proprietry engine called Spark. Spark features fully dynamically lit environments (There is no static lighting at all), dynamic occlusion culling, and extreme modability. All game code is written in accessible Lua, and stands apart from the C++ engine.

A full suite of Spark tools, including level editor, lua debugger, cinematic editor, model viewer, and more is included with the purchase of the game.

The game may be purchased at http://www.naturalselection2.com/buy.

The development team maintains an active blog at http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2, including forums where developers post and converse with community members regularly.

The development team draws on the contributions of community members. Bug fixes submitted by the community are often included in beta patches.

Beta progress is tracked by 'build numbers,' which are visible in the NS2HD in-video titles, and in the top left corner of the game (red text).

  • you know using the Taken with your Pants down is ok but using it after you been meleeing Cysts gives you the wrong idea of what ''Axe'' your using <.<

*Trying to get your pants up. . . .*

No Wonder the aliens are pissed!

  • @zombine64 Bloody oath. Even I don't know what I'm talking about!

  • Synergy?

    Between NS2 and Tribes?

    I am so so sorry.

  • @BarerRudeROC I meant in the sense that they both had a very passionate core playerbase, but had trouble spreading their appeal to a mass audience.

  • That map looks way better than the maps iv seen in beta -

    looks like better fps also

  • @Damecos

So, you meant you don't WANT a story, rather than there not being one?

Anyway, it's just backstory for how the two species' reacted to each other, no need to worry it'll force you into being part of some epic struggle between good and evil or some shit.

  • I did exactly the same after first downloading the map, kept remembering what the old ns1 map looked like.

  • @Alignn Sound a bit silly?

That's what happens when you try to attach an unnecessary story to a multiplayer game that is just endless competitive matches between 2 intentionally-balanced factions in purpose designed arenas.

  • @Alignn And on the third day of the war against terrorism the counter-terrorists descended upon the middle eastern town known simply as 'Dust' and managed to defuse the bomb that was at 'Bombsite B'. Whilst the same conflict occurred across multiple parallel dimensions with different results.

Meanwhile there was a fortress where the blue team was trying to steal the red teams intelligence and vice versa. Both sides miraculously 're-spawned' every time they were killed.

  • @Damecos

Sure it does. Look up Six Days in Sanjii.

Though nothing has been made for NS2 yet other than it being set well after NS1 ("NS was the first encounter... NS2 is the war!" or something like that), but it'll come when more features are finalized.

The NS1 manual had tons of cool immersive text, like siege turrets using gravity manipulation to see through walls and generate their sonic-boom-like shots.

  • @NexCarnifex Look up Point Shooting on wikipedia.

  • @NexCarnifex Natural Selection doesn't have an official story or 'lore'.

It does make sense that the Marine HUD is projected on the visor though.

  • 03:36 forbearance

  • BTW, YouTube / Google is lying when they say they will increase the quality of the video in the future. I uploaded some 1080p / 60 fps videos when 720p was first introduced and it never increased the resolution of the videos when 1080p support was added to YT. I put those videos up in Dec 2008 and 720p is still the max resolution that YT shows. In fact, I uploaded it in 1080p / 60 fps just as a test to see whether YT would ever increase the resolution when 1080p was added.
