Muslims closed off all trade routes between Europe and the East, wreaked havoc on the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire both militarily and economically, engaged in extensive piracy and raids all over the Mediterranean. The Islamic "golden age" was based on the usurping of Greco-Roman science and technology and on the usurping of Christian lands and wealth...

@terasele The true spirit was the armed jihad of the first few generations of Islam. When illiterate Muslims encountered Greek knowledge in Alexandria, Damascus and Antioch they were awestruck by this advanced civilization and they had to deal with the non-Muslim locals that they had conquered. But a few centuries later, the novelty of Greek science had worn off, the locals had been thouroughly subjugated and Muslims returned to their true intolerant origins...

3. Watch Prof George Saliba lectures. He is from Columbia University. Videos available on Youtube or Google video ( clearer video ).

4. Read his books.
