You said it.

Word has it that the reason John Wayne won the Oscar for True Grit was possibly out of sympathy. I saw the film, and it was not really anything to jump up on the table about.

If anything can be said about John Wayne's Oscar win you could say it was really for his past works such as THE Quiet Man and The Searchers and that it was long over due. You see at the Oscars someone usually gets screwed, as in this case Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman. The person that wins however is really winning for something else that the academy overlooked in the past.

True Grit was strictly a vehicle for Marion Robert Morrison, better known as John Wayne.

Both Kim Darby and Glen Campbell were terrible in it.

The only redeeming grace about this film is that 1) Mr. Campbell sang the title song (Which was NOT nominated for a Best Original Song Oscar); 2) It featured an early appearance of Robert Duvall.

Merry Christmas.

Two of the finest actors the world has ever seen. Especially that :Saucey talk" line from Campbell. Oooooeeee! That's some goooooood acting.
