Atlantropa was a gigantic engineering and colonization project devised by the German architect Herman Sörgel in the 1920s and promulgated by him until his death in 1952. Its central feature was a hydroelectric dam to be built across the Strait of Gibraltar, and the lowering of the surface of the Mediterranean Sea by up to 200 metres.

  • I never heard of this until today!!! sounded pretty cool but to destroy so much it would have never happened

  • @tHeWasTeDYouTh We shouldn't oversee that they heavily believed in progress and didn't think about the long term effects of of this project.

  • if the sea was like 200 meters lower, countries like italy would change into desert, right?

  • @michal1337 Most likely since the lowering would also have reduced rainfall.

  • DrGull1888, always a surprise, never a disappointment!

  • Too kind.

  • @michal1337 Part of project was two big lakes on Sahara, I think evaporation will be same. Temperature of new sea will be higher than now, so i think evaporation will be same. Two new big lakes will change, i think, level of rain falls, will be higher, i think.

  • yea, screw Italy and Greece and Spain, lets make Africa rich. This would have fucked so much up

  • @DrGull1888 true, in the Aral Sea now that it is gone there are terrible sandstorms in the area

I bet if this happened and the Med ocean was destroyed horrible sand storms like never before would hit Europe, I was watching a documentary about this but it is only on German

  • How tragic that this didn't come into place before the outbreak of the Second World War. This could have saved many millions of lives in the decade of the 1930's and 1940's, and potentially many billions in the centuries to come.

  • You may not have many viewers, but those of us who follow your production truly appreciate it. Keep it up!
